I just discovered this blog today...quite interesting. I have never come across a conservative smart growth website. working in city govt this article had particular interest. Every new subdivision here has its utilities and streets paid for via a benefitstrict...basically the developer builds the Infrastructure and the cost is divided up between the city and future property owners. your article is dead on in regards to how much money it actually takes to build. Furthermore the maintenance costs are extreme and unlike utilities that you pay a monthly bill, streets do not. This form of development is myopic at best. It supports development now over long term stability. it supports a life style that is wasteful of time and resources not ti mention quality of life. I would like to see unpaved roads....natural speed deterent, generally narrower road widths, better poor weather condition traction, lower maintenance costs.
I look forward to more articles...and i'm a citylab guy.
