My feeling is that emphasizing the ways the US stacked the deck against transit helps show how car infrastructure wasn&#039;t automatic or inevitable; at least when I talk to people many just assume we had to spend billions on that infrastructure. They see roads as &quot;normal&quot; and transit as &quot;extra.&quot; Once people accept the arbitrariness of our system — which most that I&#039;ve met do not still — I&#039;d take a more agnostic attitude.]]></description>

Europe has pursued a different model, but not one we necessarily want to pursue -- the Europeans have subsidized mass transit and taxed automobility. To my mind, the Smart Growth conservative is agnostic, not preferring one mode over the other. Create a level playing field --- no subsidies for anyone -- and let individual consumers select the modes that optimize their well being.]]></description>
