I acknowledge that the civil libertarian arguments aren’t going away. But I think they’ll lose their force. The more people get acclimated to sharing their GPS data with private corporations, the more comfortable they’ll be sharing it with the government.

There is a difference between voluntarily sharing your location with a company that gives you some benefit and an agency of the government knowing your whereabouts at any moment in time.

Checking the odometer once a year would be the ideal solution… if it weren’t for human nature. First problem, people don’t get their inspections every 12 months on the nose; some take longer. (I went 16 months last year before I remembered, holy ****, I’ve got to get inspected!) Second problem, taxing someone on the basis of mileage recorded by the odometer creates an incentive to cheat by rolling back the odometer.

I agree, but I also don’t think it has to be as elaborate as a GPS device. Wouldn’t it be just as easy for the DMV to register my miles when I get my vehicle inspected every year? Most states have vehicle inspections for emissions and making sure my blinker works, when they input the data, why not add in the mileage? That seems easy enough, and no one will no where I’ve been, because that doesn’t really matter – the miles do.
